musesfool: darth vader saying "He said what about his sister? Gross." (he said what about his sister?)
[personal profile] musesfool
I meant to link to this yesterday: 5 things Obi-Wan should have told Luke instead of lies. #obi-wan's casual relationship with the truth

Leaving aside all Doylistic reasons (i.e., that at the time, Lucas had no idea Obi-Wan was lying about anything!), given canon as it currently stands, I feel like I can only blame Obi-Wan for not clearing up 1 (Darth Vader is your father) and 5 (Princess Leia is your sister). More on that below but first, I will quickly dispatch the others:

- 2. Owen was Anakin's stepbrother and they only met once is irrelevant to Luke's situation, because Owen and Beru raised Luke and loved him and were his family in all ways that matter. Otoh, this part: Obi-Wan could have saved himself a lot of time by just telling the kid that he was hidden away to protect him from the Empire, and now it's time to step out I can agree with. That would have been perfect and not in any way set Owen and Beru up against Luke's father's 'ideals,' whatever those were meant to be at the time/according to Obi-Wan.

- 3. Yeah, it would have been great if Obi-Wan gave Luke some background on the Jedi Order, but I feel like there was time for that later, in ghostly chats during downtime or while training with Yoda. I don't know if you lead with philosophy and history when rescuing the princess and destroying the planet-killing space station are the top two things on your to-do list. And Luke spent a few weeks with Yoda so we don't really know what else he was taught aside from all the running and the handstands. He seemed to be doing all right in RotJ anyway, some Force-choking aside.

- 4. I don't think Obi-Wan was advising Luke to bury his feelings forever and ever. Luke may have interpreted it that way (certainly Anakin seemed to, despite ten years of Jedi training), so much as he was saying, don't let them overwhelm you while you're fighting the Emperor and Vader, because they will use your feelings and Leia against you if they can. And he's not wrong - Luke does get overwhelmed when Vader picks up on the whole 'sister' thing, but then he masters himself and wins out, at least in terms of 1. not dying and 2. bringing Vader back to the light. I feel like Coach Taylor lays it out best: "Every man at some point in his life is gonna lose a battle. He's gonna fight and he's gonna lose. What makes him a man, is that in the midst of that battle, he does not lose himself."

Now, the two lies that actually did some damage and Obi-Wan should have pulled on his big boy pants and told the truth (speaking from an in-text/Watsonian perspective):

1. "Darth Vader is your father" - I absolutely understand to some degree why Obi-Wan couldn't bring himself to tell Luke this, especially not early on. And I don't need to rehash all the reasons why for Obi-Wan it was not even really a lie! Why he could weasel around with "from a certain point of view" and still look his ghost-self in the ghost-mirror. I mean, I can if you want me to! I'm happy to discuss Obi-Wan at any time! but I feel like it is, like, 93% irrelevant to this particular discussion, because once Luke was leaving for Bespin, it was CRUCIAL that he have all the facts going into that confrontation, and he didn't and it cost him dearly. It didn't even need to be Obi-Wan who told him! he could have kept on with his "I'm not mad I'm just disappointed" bit as Luke left if he really needed to for his own peace of mind.

But Yoda should have done it instead of being cryptic and discouraging, and while I'm not anti-Yoda as so many people are, I do think he made a huge mistake there, and did so willfully instead of genuinely. I think it shows on both their parts that they continued to misunderstand what drove Anakin Skywalker (despite, on Obi-Wan's part, knowing him really well) and also a real unwillingness to question their own worldviews despite having them upended so terribly. I mean, twenty years of meditating in the desert/the swamp over everything that went wrong (and no doubt with a side order of routine self-flagellation for Obi-Wan, at least), and it never occurred to either of them to think, well, Anakin never did anything the way we expected, so why should he be a Sith in the expected way? (and remember, he's not actually that great at being a Sith.)

5. "Leia is your sister." I mean, I guess he'd been alone in the desert for 19 years, so maybe it wouldn't have occurred to him that cute teenagers in adrenaline-fueled and dangerous situations might end up kissing and stuff! Especially when BOTH of them were Skywalkers. I mean, he knew Anakin met Padme when he was 9 and was like, "She's the one for me!" and ten years later, actually made it happen, so I don't know what he was thinking when he neglected to mention that the girl currently inspiring Luke to radical notions of overthrowing the Empire was none other than his sister. It would have at least avoided some awkward situations and the potential for a very different sort of family tragedy, anyway. ("One more date and we would've had a Greek tragedy on our hands." - Soapdish) I guess he was just really confident in Han Solo's charms to win the princess's heart in the end? *g*

So I had heard about Pam/Tara becoming a thing on True Blood but I had stopped watching in s4 and never went back to finish the show so I never saw their storyline. But in my rewatch, I was mesmerized by the Pam/Tara storyline and how much chemistry they had together and I couldn't get enough of their scenes. I decided I had to make a treat for them and went looking for a song and after being frustrated for awhile, I finally found this one which captured some of the dom/sub aspects of their relationship which I enjoy so much. It was fun to vid as I love all their scenes and I only wish the show had done more storylines with them. I was glad to finally get a chance to vid Pam and if you're curious, you only need to watch S5 (Pam&Tara scenes) to enjoy the vid!

So one of the main reasons I offered True Blood was because I was really sad to hear that the actor who played Lafayette, Nelsan Ellis had died as Lafayette was my favorite character and the main reason I watched True Blood (also Pam). I had always wanted to make a vid for him but never got around to it and so I thought this exchange was the perfect time to do so. I wanted to make a Lafayette character study vid but I really struggled with finding a song that encapsulated all of his character so I kept looking as I rewatched the show but only watched the scenes with Lafayette, Pam or something gay in it (inc Godric/Eric) which were really the best part of the show. I fell in love with Lafayette/Jesus all over again so when I couldn't find a song, I remembered I used to want to vid Adam Lambert's Down The Rabbit Hole to the show and realized the s4 magic/medium plot would work perfectly for it. Once I decided on the song, I struggled a little with making the vid until I realized I just needed to cut the song down and then I could just use all the pretty parts of the plot and it made vidding it a lot more fun and matched my recipient's request even more. In the end, I was happy to have made it but I still hope someday somebody will make an epic Lafayette vid because he deserves it.

The past few nights, I've been in bed by 10:15, so last night when I stayed up until 11 (which is my usual bedtime), I was like, "it's so late!"

It's getting darker earlier, which always makes it feel later than it is, but last night 11 pm felt like 2 am for some reason.

For some reason my DVR didn't pick up the season premiere of Star Wars Rebels on Monday (at any of the times it aired) but it did have the first half hour set to record last night, so I pressed record for the second episode as well (why does it do that? I do not understand!), even though I watched both live.

Organization for Transformative Works Membership Drive, October 12-18, 2017

As our October 2017 fundraising drive comes to an end, we at the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW) would like to thank each and every one of you who donated or spread the word. You've helped our projects grow stronger, and we couldn't be more grateful! We would also like to recognize the tireless efforts of all the volunteers who work behind the scenes to make these drives and all of the organization's work possible.

During this drive, we raised over US$137,000 from over 5500 individual donations representing more than 70 countries. To break that down a little more: 2,733 donations were from first-time donors, 1,243 new members are eligible to vote in next year's OTW Board election, and we will be shipping out 110 thank-you gifts in the next month!

Over the past week, you've received updated information regarding our budget, checked out a timeline of major events in OTW history, and been given a glimpse into our plans for the future. The OTW has been serving the interests of fans for ten years now, and we hope to continue that work and improve our projects and services in years to come. Keep an eye on our news outlets for information on how you can help us pursue that goal.

Once again, we'd like to express our incredible gratitude to everyone who helps to make this organization successful: thank you!

(Don't forget: although the drive has ended, we do accept donations year round.)

The Organization for Transformative Works is the non-profit parent organization of multiple projects including Archive of Our Own, Fanlore, Open Doors, Transformative Works and Cultures, and OTW Legal Advocacy. We are a fan run, entirely donor-supported organization staffed by volunteers. Find out more about us on our website.

Thank You!

There was a most adorable pug in a bag on the subway this morning. It reminded me of Gizmo from Gremlins. It looked a little skeptical about the whole bag situation but was really well-behaved. And so cute!

Work continues to be ridiculously busy because in addition to my own job, they keep adding things to my to do list from jobs that aren't currently filled, so I'm doing three people's jobs. It's bullshit, and I would rant but I'm not locking the post so. Whatever. I don't get paid nearly enough for this.

Yesterday, I got an email from the realtor, who'd gotten an email from the management agent who was like, "There's no estimated monthly mortgage payment in this loan commitment letter" and I said to myself, says I, "I wondered about the exact same thing!" So the loan officer forwarded the loan estimate letter that I'd gotten back in September with the estimated monthly payment. They also wanted proof of my "bonus" since it wasn't listed in my salary verification letter so I had to send them the pay stub and the letter explaining it as a "one time extra wage payment" since that is what they call it in order to not have to tax it like a bonus, but it was a deposit that shows up on my bank statement and then in my taxable income and therefore needs an explanation. Luckily, after all that was forwarded, the agent said she was sending the application to the board for their review, so hopefully I get called for an interview soon.

In other news, I got a clean bill of health from the dentist, so I'm free from that for another six months. Of course, I totally ruined the minty fresh feel of my mouth by having cheesy garlic bread for dinner, but eh, sometimes a woman needs cheesy garlic bread, bad breath be damned.

!. We went on vacation last week and it was awesome! Colonial Williamsburg and Richmond which was a lot of fun despite the surprise October heatwave and humidity. Just getting out of town was really great and really necessary. I wish we had another week off.

@. I pretty much unplugged from social media and that was also awesome. I'm not sure I'm going to go back if I can help it. Unfortunately part of my job requires checking FB periodically, but I really hate everything right now.

#. I'm continuing to work on my Avvar!AU, and yesterday and today I hit my first writing block. I know what happens in the next section but I'm not sure how to do the bridge. The last chapter took an unexpected - but I think needed - turn, and now I have to get from B2 to C which I hadn't planned on. Why are romances haaaard? (Hahaha, I crack myself up.)

$. Work part of this week is "retreat" which is code for sitting in meetings for 8 hours, and let me tell you how happy my knee is with that. It really makes me appreciate how much I actually get up and walk around and use my standing desk and my footstool during my normal work day. I ended up standing at the back of the room for a while, and that helped some, but I still took drugs this evening. My cat makes a really great heating pad though.

%. [community profile] fandomlovespuertorico is live! I'm not offering anything, since I have one fundraiser fic still to write plus yuletide, so I'm at capacity, but I will be bidding.

^. Nonfiction books I want to read: Everybody Lies by Seth Stevens-Davidowitz and Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker. Vox has a couple interviews with the Everybody Lies author, which is about using big data from google searches and internet searches to see what people really think and want, with insights into racism and sexual desire. I read a Guardian article with the Why We Sleep guy who is a neuroscience researcher who ended up studying sleep after his Alzheimer's research pointed to stuff happening while we sleep being incredibly important for healthy brains. My sister already grabbed this one, so I'll read it when she's done and get the other one, so we can swap.

&. In other books, my dad got me As You Wish by Cary Elwes about the filming of The Princess Bride. It's a little self-congratulatory and "everybody is great!" ... but considering that my wedding was somewhat Princess Bride themed (I walked down the aisle to Vitamin String Quartet's Storybook Love, and our officient with our blessing opened with Mawwiage because we thought it would be funny and it was.) I'm giving him a pass. Plus once you get passed meeting people and into the anecdotes it's actually a lot of fun, and I was giggling a lot. I think my favorite parts were stories about Andre the Giant and hearing about the fan responses the cast gets.

*. My dad also got me Lab Girl by Hope Jahren, which I've only read the first chapter of so far. Eventually I'll lso get to the stack of sci-fi I got myself over the summer.

(. I'm low key watching Star Trek: Discovery. I haven't watched 1.05 yet. I'm torn on the show. I think I want to like it more than I actually do. But I'm giving it a chance to see if it finds itself.

). [community profile] farscapefridaypodcast  is on break till November when we pick up season 4. I'm glad we took a break, because the schedule is a bit unrelenting. I wish now that we'd taken a break between season 1 and 2 because it would have helped relieve my stress last fall a lot. But we only have one season left! I gotta say, rewatching Farscape has been kind of amazing, and this podcast is something I'm really proud of making, even though it is a metric ton of work for both [personal profile] katewrites  and me. It's totally been worth it. But I won't be sad when we're done.

_. I'm happy with my [community profile] yuletide  assignment. It'll be a little different, but fun I think. I matched on something I thought I would, given the statuses on the requests/offers page.

+. While I've written this list I've been ignoring my writing the Avvar!Au. I should get back on that.

The [community profile] fandomlovespuertorico auction is live! SO MANY amazing offerings and creators, guys, it's like the world's best fandom farmers market.

My fanfic entry is here, and I'm pretty sure you will be able to purchase me for a very low price, with this many amazing people participating.

My vidding entry is here, and while my minimum bid is a little higher at $40 (because vids are a lot more work and involve more equipment), I'm also sure that will not get bid up much, so you can have me for a lot less than the VVC auctions usually go for!
