AO3 update

So I'm pretty sure AO3 went up and over some kind of turning point in the last few months - there are now 1130 people in our invite queue. Which is a terribly intimidating number, and it just keeps going up. We'd love to bring that back down - the invite system is there purely to keep traffic from exploding to a point that we can't handle, not to discourage anyone from creating an account, but site load's been pretty heavy already lately. We came up with a plan to help ameliorate *that*, and some great work's been done already, but we're still in the process of testing everything. So basically at the moment, I'm just stuck wincing whenever I run into a 502 error. Woe! But you don't really want to rush major back-end changes if there's any alternative, and hopefully we'll have that out soon.

Uhm, wow!

That's both amazing and intimidating. Are we normal random fandom infrastructure now? :D :DD :DDD?

Yeah, I get the errors in the evenings but not usually in the mornings.

I think we are! Up through this past winter, we would get spikes of traffic that always leveled back down to a pretty standard baseline, but around April, things just took off and kept on going - I think it stopped being "I'll get an account and upload my old stuff as I have time" and became more "I'll get an account and upload my new stuff as I write it", which is what really starts to drive traffic. The posting rate has increased slowly and regularly over time - it's the number of readers that's really gone up, which is gratifying.

And yeah - evenings in the US are always the heaviest time for traffic. Good for you, bad for me! :D

Oh, don't worry about it! We're giving out dozens of invites every day, and the unused ones don't do any harm. And we could invite all 1100+ people today, it's just that I'm afraid it wouldn't end well if everybody tried to create an account and post things all at once. If the improvements in our next release make a difference, we may be able to send out more invites per day and bring down the backlog.
