Agatha Christie - Taken at the Flood

I must never have read this one before, because, oh my GOD, the ending. And I don't mean that in a good way.

So Lynn and Rowley grew up together and have been engaged for years, and she's just gotten back from being overseas for the war (WWII). The thrill is gone - farmer fiance not so exciting anymore, and there's an intriguing and dangerous young man named David in the picture. Pretty standard stuff, right?

But then! At the end of the book, Lynn tells Rowley that she's going to marry David instead, and he nearly strangles her to death. Like, seriously, strangles her. And Poirot walks in on this, and then they all sit down to tea with David while Poirot gives his "who killed whom" spiel. It turns out that Rowley killed someone accidentally (on account of being the kind of guy who goes around punching and strangling people) and David killed someone deliberately, so he gets carted off. At which point Lynn decides that she's going to go ahead and marry Rowley, because having him STRANGLE HER made her realize that he wasn't really safe and boring after all.

o.O

I feel that Miss Marple would disapprove. I sure as hell do!

Wasn't Poirot the guy who never let murder go, regardless of the circumstances?

I hope this one was written by a ghost writer... O_o
