Vividcon Premieres
(Non-vid-fans totally aren't getting sick of Vividcon posts yet, right? Right.)
Metaphor by cesperanza and flummery (Multifandom)
Heeeee! Excellent use of llamas, fireworks and giant cigars.
Sea Fever by heresluck (Slings and Arrows)
Gorgeous, awesome vid. I've only seen the first season of the show, but I liked the movement from Hamlet at the beginning, where the young couple reminds the main characters of their past, to what I assume is King Lear at the end - old age and death, the show being over, the light going out. It's a nice bittersweet progression.
Fight the Power by deejay (Tropic Thunder)
An amusing bit of deliberately silly meta. I wasn't really expecting rickrolls at the premieres show.
All Apologies by caphricacorn (Twilight)
I had read the blurb ("Edward begins to doubt his commitment to sparkle motion") for this and was expecting something more overtly funny, but I still thought it was nicely done. More tongue-in-cheek than laugh-out-loud, but I'm cool with that. And whatever the failings of the books are, the Twilight movie does have some pretty visuals.
Grown So Ugly by acridnym (Angel/BtVS)
I didn't love this at first, but the quick, jerky cuts work better for me as I watch it on the computer. And the parallel between Angel betraying Darla by getting a soul and Buffy by losing it (and generally failing to be what other people want him to be) is nice.
We Are by bananainpyjamas (T:SCC)
This was dynamic and well-edited and powerful, but it felt a little disconnected from the lyrics to me - I spent the whole time trying to figure out who "we" and "you" were, and I'm still not quite sure. I guess it could just be that if "responsible" is supposed to mean "responsible for accidentally causing the robot apocalypse" and "we" is Sarah and the other humans, then the tone of the song is oddly triumphant, because that's obviously not their goal. I dunno.
Cassandra (Dream Awake) by hellpenguin (Merlin)
A Morgana vid. I kinda like it, and being able to make Merlin look like srs bsns is not a small accomplishment. :)
Hard Sun by bradcpu and laurashapiro (Firefly)
On first viewing, I was distracted by trying to figure out where it was going with the external footage. On second viewing, I thought, okay, these are fans walking around in the world thinking about Firefly, gotcha. On third viewing, I kind of wish there were some video of the fans *together* to parallel the clips from the show that illustrate the crew meeting up and coming together and forming a sort of family. It's like it's halfway there with the ivory tower being a vidder alone in front of the computer, and the idea that people are walking around in the world alone thinking about the same thing doesn't quite get it there. On some meta level, I guess Vividcon itself is that culmination, but it's not in the vid. Or maybe that wasn't the point - I don't know! Maybe I'll have a different reaction every time I see it. That's not always a bad thing.
See the USA (In Your Chevrolet) by lapillus (Supernatural)
Awesome. There's a little bit of meta humor in the use of the reused road shots and the fact that all the 'USA' footage is, in fact, Canada, but mostly it's just a funny, perfect Impala vid.
Pretty When You Cry by diannelamerc (Dollhouse)
CREEPY AS FUCK.
Mad About You by gwyn_r (Mad Men)
A vid about the women of Mad Men. I've never seen the show, but I found the vid very easy to follow, and I really enjoyed it.
Learn to Crawl by jarrow (BSG)
Kat/Starbuck from Kat's POV. I'd have said I was kind of sick of BSG vids, but I loved this one. Really, really well-edited.
Sleeping With Ghosts by butterfly (Star Trek XI & TOS)
Epic Kirk/Spock shippyness = n'awwww. I did wonder at times how the vid would look if it were all in black and white; supersaturation makes me slightly twitchy, and I know the bootleg movie source is not the greatest.
It Comes and Goes In Waves by mlyn and feochadn (Varg Veum movies)
This is very sweet and pretty and evocative and then makes a hard right turn into blood and gore and dead bodies. Definitely caught my attention.
Turn Around by lizbetann (Bones)
Corpse humor. I was amused.
Marble House by hollywoodgrrl (Doctor Who)
Oooooh. This was cool. I loved the opening: Time Lord POV and the grandeur of the universe running into the horrors of war and humanity at its worst. And then Martha and John Smith, who are there but don't really belong, and poor Martha getting stomped on by the prejudices of the time. There's the question of what humanity looks like to the Doctor and also, through Martha and Joan and the kid whose name I don't remember, what the Doctor looks like to humans, which was a big part of the episodes. I also thought the music worked really well with the weird tension of the vid and made the creepy aliens seem even creepier. Plus, haaaarsh use of happy skippy Doctor at the end there.
Video Killed the Radio Star by dualbunny (Wizard of Oz)
This looked gorgeous, but I felt like I was kind of missing the point. I noticed that dualbunny says in her vid post that it's really a Wicked vid that uses Wizard of Oz source; that makes me feel better about not getting it, since I've neither read Wicked nor seen the musical.
American Tune by greensilver (The West Wing)
Eeee! This was one of my favorites - a great ensemble vid that covers all seven seasons of the show and really captures the spirit of it. The clips from Leo's funeral are heartbreaking, but what really got me were the crowd shots from the convention on the 'sing an American tune' line - it brings in the bigger picture of why these people do what they do: for the people, for the country, and that we're a part of that in real life.
Make Your Own Kind of Music by barkley (Multifandom)
Happymaking and lots of fun. And I had that song stuck in my head for the rest of the weekend.
Then the Morning Comes by fan_eunice (Galaxy Quest)
Ditto on the "happymaking and lots of fun" comment. And I finally watched Galaxy Quest when I got home. (I'd been meaning to for a few years!)
Location, Location, Location by Stacia Yeapanis (BtVS/Beverly Hills 90210)
Cute, but it is hard to hold the joke for the length of the whole song. I kept wondering if it would be possible to make some sort of cracked out crossover that took advantage of the fact that they're set in the same high school.
Every State Line by keerawa (SPN)
I like this one; it feels kind of Season One-ish, just in the scope, the kind of story it's telling, the lack of... cynicism, maybe? And watching it again, actually, most of the clips are from the first season. The voiceover didn't bother me; I thought it set up the vid and blended pretty well with the song.
That Was Another Country by kassrachel (Lost)
A Hurley vid! I only saw the first season of Lost, but I thought this was great. I love it when the basketball bounces on the beat, and watching it again, the ending on "you're still my friend, you didn't go out of my life" with Charlie (who's dead at that point, right?) is kind of killer. Hurley needs more hugs!
Comfortably Numb by sisabet (T:SCC)
I liked the Cameron POV with the split screens, but I didn't... totally get this? Like, I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a total inversion of the lyrics, wherein Cameron's brokenness is manifested by her becoming *less* numb - remembering Allison, choosing not to kill John, apologizing to him at the end of the season. Or that her emotional detachment is something that's appealing to John, especially in the future. I need to rewatch Allison From Palmdale, for one thing. Not a hardship. ;)
Go Baby by jescaflowne (Charlie's Angels)
and
beautiful dirty rich by astolat and merryish (American Idol)
Sparkly fun!
When Your Mind's Made Up by valoise (Highlander)
I know just enough about Highlander to appreciate comedy vids and 'they are so doing it' vids; this one was plottier than I could really parse.
Dark Room by cherryice (Merlin)
Nifty, and captures the darker aspects of the mythology.
Heaven Is a Place on Earth by rhoboat (SPN)
Heeeeee. This struck me as being sort of like a Lord King Bad Vid, and I don't mean that as an insult: like the Twilight vid, there's obvious comic intent mixed with a more or less straightforward telling of the story of Dean and Castiel. And burgers (the miracle of living!). I enjoyed it.
In My Veins (Car Crash) by millylicious (Heroes)
I was missing some context for this, since I haven't seen Heroes since early S2. Pretty creepy, though.
Boy on a String by traykor (Slings and Arrows)
I thought this was fun, but the ways in which Geoffrey was the boy on a string could have been a little clearer to me. Maybe I just haven't seen the show recently enough.
Keeper of the Fire by sweetestdrain (Multifandom)
Oh, this is such a cool idea: a vid about prophets (from Wonderfalls, Miracles, Joan of Arcadia, Carnivale, Heroes and the Dead Zone). The parallels aren't exact, but that didn't bother me much. Prophecy: the kind of gift you really wish you could return. I love the ending shot with the burning bush, too. And someday I'll have to find out what's up with that Dead Zone shot of the dude and the white handprints. I just know that it kind of freaks me out.
How the West Was Won by nc (Serenity)
This is kind of twisted. I think I approve. I may have a wee bit of Firefly/Serenity vid fatigue, but that's not the vidder's fault.
Don't Stop Me Now by jetpackmonkey (Hammer's Frankenstein movies)
Heeee. Haven't seen the movies, but thought this was a lot of fun.
They Don't Know by laurashapiro (Doctor Who)
This is what comes of too much meta: "It's... cute. It's happy! OH GOD, WHAT'S THE CATCH?" I think I've finally come to accept that sometimes a cupcake is just a cupcake.
Bromance? by wickedwords and sherrold (Multifandom)
Cute!
The Long Spear by jmtorres, niqaeli, et al. (Star Trek)
This was a really ambitious vid that aimed for an epic scope and big emotion and mostly pulled it off, even if its reach exceeded its grasp in places. The clips from all the Treks and the pictures at the end were my favorite parts; the melding in of the other vid songs didn't quite work for me, and I liked the idea of having someone sing the last verse, but that was a little hard to hear on first viewing.
