Out of the chair

I finally saw Star Trek! I feel like I can reclaim my internet citizenship now.

-I've seen most of DS9, a handful of TNG episodes, and about one episode each of Voyager, Enterprise, and TOS. (It was the one with the tribbles.) So I have a sort of vague cultural knowledge of the series, but have spent most of my life unable to tell Scotty from McCoy. (Well, in pictures. The accent's kind of a clue.)

-It was a lot of fun! Not especially deep in any respect, but just a solidly enjoyable movie.

-I thought the time travel/alternate reality storyline was a great way to go - all the joys of retcon, none of the pissed-off fans! And having Spock there to see it and participate in it adds some interesting layers. The *most* interesting layers, maybe.

-I wasn't really thinking about it when watching the scene the first time, but from Original!Spock's perspective, Kirk is dead, right? And probably has been for quite some time, assuming humans in the future don't live to 160? I have no idea which of the characters actually died in any of the movies or had their deaths written into novels or spin-offs, but it stands to reason most of them would be by then. How bittersweet would that be, to see all your old friends again, young, at the cost of being stuck in an AU by yourself and having gotten your planet destroyed.

-I <3 this Kirk. He was likable and admirable and funny and also the kind of guy you'd want to punch in the groin from time to time. All seems in character from what I know. And he had really good chemistry with pretty much everyone.

-Spock is angry and pissy and volatile, which... seems like a distinct change? I started to warm up to him, but it took a bit longer. One suspects that Kirk was right, he was just pissed that someone beat his test. And I don't really buy him as a stickler for rules and regulations when he's sleeping with one of his students. Things started to gel more when he and Kirk started working as a team, though.

-The movie did strike me as being quite slashy, in the sense that it's the story of Kirk and Spock's relationship. We see where they come from, we see what makes them who they are, we see how they meet, we see how they overcome some mutual bad first impressions, and we hear all about their EPIC DESTINED FRIENDSHIP. The real resolution to the story isn't Nero getting blown up (Nero might as well be Stock Villain #37), it's Kirk and Spock standing shoulder-to-shoulder, saving the day.

-Gender balance. *grumble grumble* Yes, they were limited by the source material, but, well. Sulu got to kick ass, Chekov saved a bunch of people with his mad joystick skillz, Scotty rescued Kirk, Spock and Pike at a critical moment, and even McCoy played an active role in sneaking Kirk onboard the Enterprise and then running around injecting him with things (which was hilarious). Uhura's main contribution to the movie was telling her roommate about a transmission she picked up while stripping to her underwear, and Kirk is the one who figures out what the significance of it is. They tell us she's brilliant but we don't get to see it; in practice, she's there for Kirk to chase after and Spock to make out with. The other significant women in the story are Kirk and Spock's mothers, who have neither names nor professions - they're there to give birth and die, respectively. I just think the franchise could do better. (Obviously they have done better in other series, and I'd like to not think we're moving backwards.)

-Final thought: Pike! Pike was awesome.

Fiiiiiiiiiiiiic. *wallows*
