elz: delicious berries for social change (berries)

teevee, cont'd

Having read the rundowns of the new fall tv shows (EW has some good write-ups):

There seem to be a lot fewer high-concept shows this year and a lot more bread-and-butter cop shows and romantic comedies. CBS wins at "worst idea for a television show" with Mike and Molly, a comedy about two fat people who fall in love. Which is funny, because they're fat, see? (This sadly involves Melissa McCarthy from Gilmore Girls and Swoosie Kurtz, and comes from the creator of The Big Bang Theory. *winces*) I also question the wisdom of $#! My Dad Says (starring William Shatner!) - how do you advertise a show whose title you can't say on network tv?

New shows I am most likely to watch or otherwise investigate:

  • Nikita - CW, Thursdays at 9pm

On my list because: I dig actiony shows with female leads. I kinda like the lead actress from what we see in the trailer clip, and there are a bunch of familiar names in the cast: Shane West plays the love interest; and Melinda Clarke and Xander Berkeley are always entertaining and usually up to no good.

  • No Ordinary Family - ABC, Tuesdays at 8pm

On my list because: Julie Benz and Michael Chiklis as parents whose family gets superpowers! It sounds more than a little like The Incredibles meets Heroes, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing.

  • The Undercovers - NBC, Wednesdays at 8pm

On my list because: JJ Abrams, I am always skeptical of you, but you keep making the kinds of things I want to see. *sigh* Married spies and their return to the spy business after having retired - it looks cute.

  • Hawaii Five-O - CBS, Mondays at 10pm

On my list because: Grace Park, Daniel Dae Kim, Alex O'Loughlin. The safe bet is probably that this will be a very bad remake which will die a quick death, and it's doubtful that I'll like it more than Castle, but it seems like the kind of show that will have a fandom if it's any good at all. And if there are going to be a zillion new cop shows, I might as well watch one of them at least once.

  • Mr. Sunshine - ABC, midseason

On my list because: Matthew Perry, Alison Janney, Thomas Schlamme. It's like a Sorkin reunion without the Sorkin! I almost never wind up keeping up with comedies on tv, but if it's actually as funny as the trailer, I might make an exception.

There's also a sci-fi/time travel show from Steven Spielberg, Brannon Braga and David Fury scheduled for midseason on FOX, but (a) it doesn't even appear to have a cast yet, and (b) sci-fi + FOX = cancellation. (Fringe has clearly only escaped that fate because I'm not watching it.) So I'm not holding my breath on that one.
