musesfool: lester bangs on rock'n'roll (music)

So this week's AV Club Q&A is favorite one hit wonders (though certainly the definition of "one hit" is...elastic, and dependent in many cases on where you live), and more than a couple of songs I love got mentioned and then I ended up departing from that original premise and going on a youtube spiral of music from my teenage years, a lot of which I hadn't heard in decades probably (and some of which is still in regular rotation on my iPod, though I left out most of the usual suspects), but here are some gems:

- Let Me Go - Heaven 17
- Hit That Perfect Beat - Bronski Beat
- Don't Go - Yaz
- Love to Hate You - Erasure
- Obsession - Animotion
- West End Girls - Pet Shop Boys
- Tenderness - General Public
- I Melt With You - Modern English
- Whisper to a Scream - Icicle Works
- Cruel Summer - Bananarama
- Voices Carry - 'Til Tuesday
- Forever Young - Alphaville
- What Do All the People Know? - the Monroes
- Heart and Soul - T'Pau
- If You Leave - OMD
- Question of Lust - Depeche Mode
- The Promise - When In Rome
- True - Spandau Ballet
- Hold Me Now - Thompson Twins
- No One Is to Blame - Howard Jones
- Don't Dream It's Over - Crowded House

Continuing to have trouble setting aside time to focus on work with the kids home for the summer.

After taking my mom to her doctor appointment and subsequent errands on Tuesday, I spent most of Wednesday through Friday sick in bed with a fever and sore throat, but no other obvious symptoms. Now I'm finally feeling better, and Robby has decided that since Tropical Storm Cindy's gift of some ridiculous number of inches of soaking rain will prevent him from doing his usual maintenance out at our church this weekend, this is the best time to disrupt the downstairs living area and try to finish constructing Connor's loft bed.

If I didn't have to take the kids to swim lessons today, I'd probably flee to the library and try to get some serious work done. Maybe that strategy will work next weekend, if I can find someplace to go that isn't closed for the holiday.

In other news, Steam is having their annual sale and I've discovered that most of their older LEGO games (pre-Marvel) are PC-only. I really wanted to put the Harry Potter games on my laptop so that I could play them without broadcasting them to the rest of the household. There's also a PC game that Connor wants that is too resource intensive for his poor old gaming PC. But I read on Twitter last night that Starship Titanic is on Steam for $1.49, so I'll get that if nothing else. I've been wanting to play it again ever since I saw Passengers.

I'm also realizing how much cheaper and easier to find the PlayStation 4 is compared to the Nintendo Switch, and that's probably also the better platform to choose if I want to play Kingdom Hearts 3, assuming it ever gets released.

Stalking, social networks and scripts

*taps mic* is this thing still on?

Two things
  1. I'm gonna need to vent for a few days (weeks?) until I stop having all these feelings
  2. This was SO MUCH LESS HORRIBLE because I had support and advice and information so I am paying it forward.
In brief: I went to a tech conference, I got a call in my hotel room on my hotel phone at 11pm from a man with an American accent who said he’d been watching me, it looked like I was having fun in my hotel room, and how about he join me in my hotel room. I declined and hung up. My chat group validated my initial horrified reaction and supported me through calling hotel security, getting my room changed, and his eventual discovery and expulsion from the hotel.

On stalking: It is never OK to do this kind of thing, it is not funny, it is not sexy. It made me feel unsafe. It meant the next day, until he was gone, that I second-guessed every interaction at that conference (of which men were probably 90% of the attendees) and wasted a lot of energy managing anxiety when I could have been benefiting from that very expensive conference ticket. I’m probably going to be having feelings about this for a long time.

On social networks: I was too busy being half awake and alarmed to have an effective response when this happened. It took time to process, it was my social network who prompted me through calling security and requesting the room change, I asked for my conference ID badge to be redacted on my own, but it took a few hours before I was thinking strategically and not just feeling overwhelmed. They validated my feelings, made me feel like it was OK to ask for what I needed, and meant I never felt alone.

THANK YOU.

Treasure the good people you meet in your life, nurture those relationships and share your strength when you can.

On scripts: Being prepared, having a response, knowing what I could say or do or expect can make a huge difference to my emotional well being, and to how I choose to act. It enables me to act rather than freeze up in difficult situations, it means I can protect myself, and it means I can stand up for myself and others.

My proposed future Script
  1. Complain to hotel security, that’s what they are for
  2. Request a room change, a different room when someone creepy knows where you are is A Good Thing.
  3. Complain to the police - I am sad I did not do this, awful!person could have been going home with a police record that might contribute to a future someone’s safety.
This is gonna work better from some humans than others, I’m going to wield being a white woman-ish person as hard as I can given it’s what I have to work with.

On positive action: One of my coping strategies is to try and find a positive action I can do, it helps me channel fear and anger into something that generates better feelings, and makes me feel less helpless when faced with something awful. My positive actions for this event are:
  • To share this with you; may this be in some way useful or empowering for you
  • To inoculate my workplace (via complaining about this a lot) in order to a) share my script with female coworkers and b) let my male coworkers know this is not OK and has consequences.
  • To reflect on how lucky I am to have such excellent support networks, that there were responsive hotel staff, and supportive conference staff

OMG Amazing! And not finished! I might die. But soooo amazing. Yes, it's Modern Girl in Thedas Mary-Sueish fic, but SOOOO AMAZZZING!

Ad Infinitum (189640 words) by Stormontheocean
Chapters: 68/?
Fandom: Dragon Age: Inquisition, Dragon Age (Video Games), Dragon Age - All Media Types
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Relationships: Female Lavellan/Solas, Cullen Rutherford/OC, Iron Bull/Dorian Pavus
Characters: Iron Bull, Solas, Varric Tethras, Dorian Pavus, Cassandra Pentaghast, Original Female Character(s), Female Lavellan, Cullen Rutherford
Additional Tags: Slow Burn, No really the slowest burn ever, and also Dragons, MGiT, Modern Girl in Thedas, Cullen can sometimes be a dick, But frustratingly not all the time, Ambiguous Bull, Realistic enough to talk about latrines

Summary:After a bus accident, Liz wakes up in Haven, stuck in the fictional world of Dragon Age. How does a modern girl get by when she can't speak the language, and her expansive knowledge of the Blight and Kirkwall, but limited knowledge of Inquisition would only make her look more suspicious? Fake being deaf and mute, and hope not to get caught before she can find proof of her origin. But the best laid plans never work out as expected... -Summary by the magnificent and amazing ElyssaCousland.

Why I love it: So I might have stayed up till 5 am on a work night to keep reading this. I have a soft spot for fish out of water stories, and this one is a Modern Girl in Thedas trope where Liz is not the Inquisitor but ends up joining the Inquisition because she doesn't know what to do. She does have prior knowledge of the first part of the game as a video game in her/our world, but since she never went past Haven, her knowledge is limited. And that's where this fic really takes off. It is not a game rehash. Instead we get Liz adapting to her new world, making friends, losing them, making new ones, working hard, and being sent to the Hinterlands for six months with the Chargers. Brilliant plot twists, excellent writing, and some really layered and well-developed characters from the OC herself, to the Chargers who get fleshed out, to the companions and advisors and even the Inquisitor who is a solid if background character. War and trauma happen and the fallout gets to play out. The functioning of the Inquisition itself is explored, and did I mention that the new plot thing that holds it all together is really fun and amazing? Because it is. This is definitely one to read. Even if it isn't finished yet.

Today I called Sen. Schumer and Sen. Gillibrand and said the following:
Hi, my name is [[personal profile] watersword] and my zip code is [redacted]; I'm calling to ask you to add a tally mark to your count of constituents who have called and are very angry about the Republican anti-health care bill.

Both times I was answered fairly promptly, the staffer was clearly charmed by my "I know you are on my side, I'm trying to help," and I was informed that Schumer's office has gotten ~500 calls over the past ten days on the issue (I'm not sure if that's all the offices, including Washington, or just the NYC office I called), and the Gillibrand staffer I spoke was on his ~60th call on the subject for the day. This is a horrible slog but I am going to keep showing the fuck up.

Last night, we had dinner at Joanne's, the Lady Gaga family restaurant. The food was fine, but for the prices they charge, I expected at least two meatballs with my spaghetti and meatball dinner. To be fair, the one meatball was of decent size, but still, it's listed as spaghetti and meatballs on the menu so it's not ridiculous to expect there to be more than one meatball on the plate. I am just saying.

It's warm and clammy today, which is my second least favorite combination (cold and clammy is worse), but I'm looking forward to the weekend, as this week has seemed endless. It was so hard to get out bed. Sigh.

I did just get off the phone with 1. the realtor and then 2. the lawyer, so things are progressing there re: the negotiation of a slightly lower price due to the low appraisal (all thanks, apparently, to the fact that while the seller lists the apartment in Forest Hills, it actually exists in Rego Park which is one - slightly less expensive - neighborhood over. And if you are from Queens, you know what I mean). The question is whether this affects the lender in any way, but since the loan amount is the loan amount regardless, I'm not sure why it would? but what do I know? As per my lawyer's instructions, I am playing dumb (I mean, on this topic, despite all the info from Uncle Google, I actually am kind of dumb? so it's not hard! *hands*) The lawyer and mortgage broker are on top of that.

When I spoke to the realtor this morning, I was like, it's been a week since they received my application but I shouldn't expect to hear from them before the Fourth of July weekend? and he was like, "they don't like to disclose their schedule but I'll ask for an update," and then he just texted me to say that the board has received and is reviewing my application so EEP! That, more than the bank or the seller or the more normal processes of home-buying is what is freaking me out. I have more to say about this but probably not until it's all over, and even then, probably only in a locked post. Mostly what I want to say is EEP! At least I found my black dress (and my mom's pearls *snerk*) so I'm prepared!

I feel like I should have something fannish to say, and I'm sure I did before these phone calls all started happening, but I guess for right now, this househunting business is my main fandom. Sigh.

Confessions of a Trekker: I really don't like ST VI - The Undiscovered Country. Which is, I've discovered, something of a minority opinion, for at least the vocal part of fandom holds this last cinematic outing of the TOS crew in a fond light. However, now and then the dissent becomes vocal, too, as in this rewatch post about the movie in question .

In more fun Trek news, check out this vid about everyone's favourite Cardassian tailor-plus-spy:

Dedicated Follower of Fashion

(Every now and then I wish the movies instead of going for the nth version of Wrath of Khan (with or without a villain called Khan) would tackle the Cardassians instead. And then I conclude the movies would probably mishandle the Cardassians as badly as they did the Romulans, and am glad the Cardassians so far have been reserved for tv.)

And lastly, a BSG fanfic rec:

Rippling Light: tender and heartbreaking take on the friendship of Felix Gaeta and Anastasia Dualla, two characters for whom the phrase "they deserved better" might have been invented.

Getting this done before the Munich Film Festival starts tomorrow (guests of honor: Bryan Cranston and Sofia Coppola, who brings her parents along!).

Now that the season is over, I'm still not sure whether Fuller's decision to stretch the main plot out and pace it the way he does is justified. I mean, we STILL haven't reached the House on the Rock yet, and I assumed that would happen in the third episode, as it's this story's Council of Elrond scene, so to speak. Just think of a LotR tv adaption where they've barely made out of the Shire by the time the season finishes. Otoh, all that Fuller & Co. have added does enrich the story and I wouldn't have wanted to miss it, so.

And the moral of the story is... )

What I just finished reading: I finished Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel and I have many thoughts, detailed under the cut. Spoilers natch.

Fortunately there is fanfic that is infinitely more satisfying to read. Both of these are Dragon Age (because I, uh, tripped and fell and started a third playthrough of Inquisition).

By The Still Waters (83755 words) by emilyenrose
Chapters: 18/18
Fandom: Dragon Age: Inquisition, Dragon Age II
Rating: Mature
Relationships: Fenris/Male Hawke, Female Lavellan/Solas
Summary: Hawke was left in the Fade. Fenris goes looking for him. He doesn't go alone.

Why I loved it: Excellent Fenris, excellent Varric, excellent Merril, excellent Hawke -- all set in a post Inquisitions story which is incredibly well put together. Seriously good plot paired with so much Fenris-pining and emotions, and also Solas and Lavellan in there to mix things up. It was written pre-Trespasser, but I would say don't read unless you want Trespasser spoilers because she did a hell of a job predicting some of the plot twists.

The Soul has Bandaged moments (151124 words) by insideofadog
Chapters: 64/64
Fandom: Dragon Age: Inquisition, Dragon Age (Video Games)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Relationships: Cullen Rutherford/Female Mage Trevelyan,
Summary: A big, sweeping tale of two mature people coming together and trying to make it work, despite their pasts. Told in the Inquisition's own words, through letters, personal journal entries, and reports. Humor, sex, friendship, and most of all, romance. My Inquisitor is a capable and slightly odd mage, who finds herself in a strange dance with a good man, who wants only to atone for his past and build a new life for himself. Can people whose lives were forever altered by the Circles truly find a future together?

Why I loved it: Okay, this was one I'd started and stopped a couple times in the past because it wasn't MY Inquisitor, but once I got past that, it was actually a really good fic. Nice and long, told in letters Cullen and Trevelyan exchange as well as journal entries from the two of them plus Cassandra and occasional others. Focus is on the romance, and the interstitial times, and there is a minimum of game rehash. I just really liked the slow portrayal of these two falling in love and struggling with relationship issues while balancing their duty.

Beta: Thanks to [personal profile] katewrites  and [personal profile] hannah  for beta reading.

Summary: In a slightly altered canon-world where Cordelia's visions do indeed pass to The Groosalugg, Groo finds himself in need of a warrior companion and he has been reliably informed that recently returned Faith would be most excellent.

Faith's not so sure this is going to work out. But he's pretty to look at.

Would anyone be interested in betaing a Star Wars vid? I have some tweaks to make but if everything goes well on the (ugh gross awful) colonoscopy tomorrow, I should be able to have a copy ready by tomorrow evening. The bad part is that it's due on Friday, so I kind of don't have a lot of time.

It's the original trilogy and Rogue One and The Force Awakens if that matters.
